Augusto Pinochet Dead at 91

Pinochet's Death Sparks Clashes in Chile

Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who terrorized his opponents for 17 years after taking power in a bloody coup, died Sunday, putting an end to a decade of intensifying efforts to bring him to trial for human rights abuses blamed on his regime. He was 91.

Good riddance.

While I certainly don't mourn his death I am sorry he was never condemned by a court of law for the atrocities perpetrated under his orders and in his name.

I always thought the so-called "health problems" that kept him out of a courtroom were actually powerful people who did not want to be implicated.

As I read other blogs today, I learned that 12/10 is Human Rights Day. Things that make you go hmmmm....Pinochet died on Human Rights Day. These are the kinds of things that convince me that Someone is driving this bus, it can't be random.

Although he wasn't condemned, at 91 he was in the midst of court trials. His last days were not peaceful.

Believe me, I didn't shed a tear when I heard this story on the news last night. He got away too easily.
